Upskilling for the Unique

Empower the individual. See organizational results.

The bridge between learner wants and organizational needs

"This is for babies."

A common complaint for sixth graders forced to go to Vacation Bible School and my introduction to learner centered design at fifteen years old. How could I excite ornery preteens who would rather be literally anywhere else? I tossed the elementary teaching guide and gave them what they really wanted- to be treated like they were 12, not 6. I created presentations, activities, and interactive lectures packed with weird and wacky facts that appeal to the age group while staying true to the goals of the program. Every year the typically small sixth grade group doubled or tripled under age-appropriate and empathetic instruction.

I've found the same concepts apply to adults. Whether they believe the instruction to be for "babies" or "entry level," one of the most common issues in training is mistaken identity. The training just isn't personalized enough to be effective. The first step to remedy the situation is a deep analysis of what the learner wants and what they believe they already know. The confidence, experience, and expectations they bring to training matter are as integral to learning as the content.

Employees that receive applicable and personalized training not only perform better but stay longer. Backed with leadership support, employees will feel heard, seen, and empowered. Journey with me to build organizational morale, skill, and synergy with science-backed training methods and your organizational's unique brand.

"An organization's ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly is the ultimate competitive advantage."

My Process

Define the problem

This stage requires interviews, surveys, and data reports from clients, leadership, and the target audience.

Define the Solution

What will the solution look like? How much will it cost? What will be the return of interest?

Callibrate

Use learner and stakeholder feedback to refine the solution.

Deliberate Root Cause of the Issue

Is it a problem that can be filled by training? If so, are there other solutions available?

Prototype

Develop and test the solution on sample sets of learners. Gather feedback from test sessions.

Implementation

The finished product is ready for rollout. Train-the-trainer and additional resources are supplies as needed.

About Me.

I began volunteering to develop courses in 2012 and since then I've been honing my craft in creating learner-centered courses that excite and empower learners. Partnering with the federal government since 2020, I have experienced the rush and rise of eLearning and Virtual Instructor Led during the pandemic. I have experience developing webinars, web-based training, and instructor-led training supporting agency-wide policy rollout and niche departmental upskilling. As a Senior Instructional Designer, I lead and develop with empathy, integrity, and transparency.
